Know the signs of mouth cancer…
Mouth Cancer Action Month begins in November and here we take a look at the signs of mouth cancer, contributory factors and how to perform a self-check for mouth cancer.

Mouth cancer can strike in any area of the mouth including lips, cheeks and tongue, as well as other areas. Because it covers so many areas its important to know what to look out for.
The signs and symptoms of mouth cancer include:
· Mouth ulcers which do not heal within three weeks
· Red and white patches in the mouth
· Lumps or swellings in the mouth or head and neck area
If you have any concerns about changes in your mouth then please book an appointment at the practice.
It’s important to be aware of your mouth so that you can notice any changes quickly, and act appropriately. Here are some tips on performing a self-examination for mouth cancer.
Cheek – look out for red, white or dark patches. Put your index finger inside your cheek and your thumb on the outside. Squeeze the cheek to check for any lumps or swellings.
Head and Neck – Do both sides look the same? Look for any lumps or swellings that are only on one side of your face.
Mouth – Run your finger on the roof of your mouth to feel for any lumps. Repeat this on the floor of your mouth.
Neck – Feel and press along both sides of your neck. Can you feel any swellings or lumps?
Lips – Pull down the lower lips and look for any sores or changes in colour. Use your thumb and index finger to feel the lips for lumps or swellings, or changes in texture.
Tongue - Look for any changes in colour or changes in texture. Check the sides for swellings and lumps, changes in colour or ulcers. Examine the underside of your tongue too.
