We’ve been ‘open’ again for a little while now and aside from dealing with emergencies and those patients that had issues during the most ferocious phase of lockdown we are able to continue routine dentistry now, but what does that mean?

We don’t really like the word routine, or indeed the word check-up, as both don’t really give a clear idea of what is involved when you visit the dentist.

Routine dental examinations are a must if you’d like your smile to last a lifetime.  You shouldn’t only think about visiting the dentist when you have an issue or are in pain.  Prevention is always better than cure and if you’ve ever had a toothache, you’ll know that this is probably never truer than when it comes to your teeth!

One of the most important things we do at a dental examination is a mouth cancer check.  We’ll do an examination for signs of mouth cancer, as well as neck and head cancer.  We check for any lumps on your head or neck and also for any red or white patches in your mouth.  On most occasions these checks do not reveal anything, thankfully, but if they did, they could potentially save your life.  It’s particularly hard to look inside your own mouth, even with a mirror, so is best left to the professionals when you visit. Saying that, if you do have any concerns then you should speak to us as soon as possible.

Not only have we trained for many years to diagnose dental problems we can also treat them but more importantly we can help prevent them! Potential problems we can spot during a routine examination include the onset of gum disease and dental decay. When it comes to your oral health it is important you are proactive and seeing us regularly so that we can catch any issues early before they become a problem.

There really isn’t anyone better placed to help you keep on top of your oral health than a dentist, so we should be your first port of call when it comes to concerns about your teeth and mouth.
